Aranmula Mirror (Kannadi) making video : www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y-kWGe01jE

The exquisite "Aranmula Mirror" is a very special type of metal mirror produced only in Aranmula, a village in the state of Kerala in India. Aranmula Metal Mirror is a precious inherited gift. The mystery of its production is a family gift handed over through generations. Indeed, the ancient art of making metal mirrors is still practiced, without modification, by a few family-based artisans in Aranmula ( Thikkinampallil family). The manufacture of Aranmula Mirror has been a zealously guarded secret of a handful of these surviving artisans.

Aranmula Metal Mirror is a rare piece of craft that had existed even during the Vedic period of Indian history. The myth about the origin and secret of its composition makes it a truly fascinating craft. As traditional as the mirror-making technology is, the artisans' belief that the composition of the metal mirror is divine and some undisclosed metals alloyed with silver, bronze, copper and tin are responsible for the distortion-free images.

Aranmula Mirror is not mass produced and is 100% hand made with all its perfections as how one looks at it?, Aranmula Metal Mirror is the only mirror which reflects from the front plane. It is the only metal mirror available, Unlike Ordinary Glass mirror , Image from Aranmula Mirror is reflected from upper surface of reflecting material , where in Glass mirror  image reflected from bottom layer where mercury is pasted . So real image is only captured in the Aranmula Mirror. This had its popularity until the advent of the commercially manufactured glass mirrors which proved to be much cheaper. The popularity of the handicraft grew by bounds only a decade ago, stepping us its demand especially in foreign countries.

" frames. Aranmula Mirror is as beautiful and attractive as the glittering gold purified in fire"

A huge amount of determination, perseverance and patience goes into the making of this enchanting mirror. Mud from the local paddy fields is used for the mould into which the molten alloy mix is poured to cast the mirror and the technique followed is the cire-perdue or the lost wax method of casting. Even with the utmost care, only about 60% of the cast metal mirrors can be salvaged, the rest get damaged in the process of manufacture. The metal mirror is then polished using well-ground, burnt clay powder mixed with special oil on a jute cloth. To achieve a highly reflective surface, polishing can go on from one to several days. When a satisfactory finish is achieved, the mirror is mounted on various models of artistic brass.

Major bell metal crafts include traditional lamps, uruli & temple pooja sets etc. At first the specimen structure is made by specially formulated mud. This is the inner shape of the original article. After drying this in sunlight, wax is coated over this structure. The wax makes the original shape of item. This is the actual shape of the item. This wax works combines both skill and artistically abilities. Customer is allowed to check out this wax proof . Then five layers of different quality mud, nice to hard, pasted over this wax shape. After every mud coating natural drying is essential. Then keeping this structure in furnace. Our furnace is not electric or gas, we are using only woods and coconut shell. (E) Silver Crafts

ENAMELLED SILVER BIRDS, ANIMALS AND ARTICLES

The ancient art of Enamelling,. Once popular with the Persians and Mughals, it now lies forgotten. Lords and kings used to appoint craftsmen who used to produce wonderful objects especially animals, birds and utensils. This intriguing art became a pulsating passion with us. Almost obsessed, we began a long and tedious search for artisans. But what is Silver Enamelling? Simply put, it is the technique of fusing a coloured glassy substance on silver. But not so simple, once you go into the details. More than half a dozen artisans work on a single piece. Guaranteed Pure Silver (92.5%) is moulded into the shape of a bird. Great concentration and patience is required for the same. To gently taper the tail of a bird, make it wafer thin at the end and perfect the form, at times takes more than a year. The animate sculpt, mixing of glass enamel, engraving, coating, baking, polishing, is infinitely difficult. The artisan hammers and chisels to engrave the motifs. Mixing colours in the right proportion to match the colouring of the bird is a tricky task. The silver pieces are filled with laquer (a natural resin )  to further strengthen and it goes on.So the whole weight of the articles are not actual weight of silver. But it’s the end result that really matters and that is a breathtaking, almost real to life, masterpiece. For each piece a collector’s delight and a connoisseur’s dream. Ebony Wood or Enamelled Silver is used for the Base/Stand of the Artifact. Price depends on the amount of silver used.
